Analyze the roles of the individual and of society in achieving justice. How are those roles related/ balanced?
Individuals are the stepping stones for a whole society, one person's opinion builds one more brick to the tower of all other individuals. All these bricks form one sturdy building where a society flourishes and develops as one. However, without the foundations of everyone, the tower will break. Society needs everyone's voice to be heard to be a whole, united community. Each person contributes their own idea, thoughts, or opinions. In a society, the people all are in agreed terms at times and are all one, strong voice. Every one is usually on equal terms and agreements, all the decisions and actions from a group are represented with cooperation and are agreed on.
In cases concerning justice, individuals often are able to speak their mind more as they have no certain limits to achieving their goals when alone. However, an individual does not hold as much power as a society in general. The individual, although, is able to be self-reliant on them self where as in a society, people are dependent on each other. A society can often conflict with justice, people are more easily influenced by others and believe in things that aren't fair or just. But in a society, people are able to better regulate injustices at times as you have the back up of others and more support from others. For example, when Tom Robinson was convicted guilty in his trial, an injustice based on racism, society knew the act was unjust and Tom was innocent to all the other people. Society and individuals both, however, van't always bring justice in life.
In the Scottsboro Boys trial, after 8 of the 9 convicts were found guilty, Ruby, one of the two girls who accused the boys originally, confessed the truth and said the boys were innocent. This shows that an individual can say what they believe is right, and despite the trouble she already caused, Ruby eventually did the right thing without society's approval or thoughts. An individual alone can make a difference, society is only an obstacle since there is always going to be pressure from others. An example of peer pressure was when the Emmett Till case occurred. When Emmett flirted with a young, white women, he didn't know there would be serious consequences. The women's husband was outraged, and he saw that if he didn't act, the town would see him as a coward or a fool. Pressure, pride, and his ego were all factors when he cruelly murdered Emmett. As an individual, you are able to control your own life without others judging you constantly.
